Families are invited to join in the afternoon festivities which include dancing, contests, and great German cuisine. The event is FREE to attend and begins at 3:00 pm.
Festivities will be led by the teachers from German School campus to entertain families with dances and games in which children can earn prizes. Michele Scofield will be the Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Martine Jago will lead the dancing, Kristin Aull will DJ, and school principal, and Rhineland native, Ursula Schoeneich will lead the games.
Old World German Restaurant will be cooking up their famous authentic German food for purchase, including traditional Fasching delicacies such as the famous “Berliners,” “Krapfen,” and “Currywurst.”
Fasching, originated in several German-speaking regions of Europe, such as Austria and Bavaria and the Rhineland, Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz almost 1000 years ago. Like Carnival, and Mardi Gras each has its traditions in ancient Spring festivals, prior to Easter., Carnival has been primarily celebrated in areas, such as Brazil, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and Ecuador, even in Venice, Italy! The word Carnival is Latin and literally means "to give up meat" as they usually do during the fasting days of Lent when more fish is eaten. Mardi Gras got its start in 1699 when the French first celebrated "Fat Tuesday," and is a day to indulge on rich foods before the fasting often done before Easter. All three festivals are known for their bright, colorful costumes and loud music and are a joyful celebration to enjoy life for young and old.
